Christiane Löhr
sculpture and drawing - June 23 until July 24, 2004

Among hundreds of video screens, moving images, loud speakers, huge installations of Harald Szeemann`s “ Plateau of Humankind” at the last Venice Biennale, a small yellow tower-like construction made of plant seeds was standing for its beauty and fragility. It looked small and delicate, but at the same time it gave an impression of incredible strength and solidity. It was a work of Christiane Löhr. Since the late `90s this young German artist has been developing extremely original work, using plants or seeds as a material for construction of small scale imaginary architectures, or making large scale interventions in the space, such as constructing high columns (up to 5 meters) with horse hair. With her work she is indicating the fragility and incredible force of nature, reminding us of the importance of our consciousness of earth, its natural resources and the preservation of a relationship with nature in our hyper technological culture. (Dobrila Denegri)

Christiane Löhr was born in 1965 at Wiesbaden/Germany, graduated at the art academy at Düsseldorf as a “Meisterschülerin” of Jannis Kounellis. She lives and works at Cologne and Prato (Italy). She participated at 49. Biennale di Venezia 2001, curated by Harald Szeemann and was artist in residence 2002 at Headlands Center for The Arts, San Francisco. Christiane Löhr exhibited at many German Kunstvereinen and Museums, as Kunstverein Wiesbaden and Kunstmuseum Bonn as well as at many international places as Kunsthalle Bern (2002), im MART, Roverto (2003) und dem Musée d´Art Moderne de Saint-Etienne Métropole (2004). Since 1997 her work is represented by Galleria Salvatore + Caroline Ala (Milan). July 10th a solo exhibition of her works take place at Gori Foundation, Pistoia (Italy).
